New Coaches: Stop These 7 Habits If You Want Clients & Confidence
Okay, my wellness coach friend—let’s talk about the sneaky stuff that’s sabotaging your coaching business success.
I’m not talking about forgetting to post on Instagram or ghosting your email list for a month (or 3).
I’m talking about the subconscious mental habits that are quietly blocking your success, draining your energy, and keeping you stuck wondering, “Why am I not further along by now?”
These habits aren’t physical. They’re psychological.
They masquerade as logic.
They dress up like “being responsible” or “not ready yet.”
But really?
They’re slowing your roll and making business WAY harder than it needs to be.
Let’s lovingly call them out—and shift them into something way more empowering.
The 7 Psychological Habits Keeping You STUCK:
Bad Habit #1: Not Being Selfish Enough
Yup. I said it.
You’re not being selfish enough—and it’s costing you.
You keep putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own: your kids, your partner, your clients, your neighbor’s cat.
And while you’re over there saving the world, your dreams are chilling on the back burner...burning.
Here’s the truth: burned-out coaches don’t build thriving businesses.
You’ve got to protect your energy like it’s your job—because it actually is:
You are the product.
You are the magic.
And if you’re running on 0, no one gets the best of you (including you).
A suffocated savior helps no one.
✅ What to do instead:
Set your 3 daily non-negotiable S’s (Sleep, Silence, Sweat)
Say no without apologizing or overexplaining. State that you aren’t available and let any negative reactions expose their lack of care for your well being.
Focus on being strategically selfish; meaning if you don’t have the energy, if it’s not important, if you have to give up something important, or if you will hate it, decline. Insert mic drop.
Strategic selfishness isn’t rude—it’s responsible.
By saying yes to one thing you are simultaneously saying no to something else, and vice versa. Be sure your “yeses” and “no’s” are worth it. Be the coach who walks her talk and takes care of her own damn self.
Bad Habit #2: Obsessing Over “Where Do I Start?”
Listen, I get it. You’re new to this whole coaching business thing and it feels like there are a million ways to mess it up.
But here’s the sassy truth bomb: “Where do I start?” is often code for “I’m scared I’ll fail.”
And I lovingly say this: Of course you're scared. But you can’t build a business from the fetal position under your weighted blanket.
✅ What to do instead:
Start messy. Start before you feel ready. Start where you are. The only wrong move? Not moving at all.
Action brings clarity. Experience builds confidence. You don’t need the “perfect” first step—you just need a damn step.
Bad Habit #3: Never Hitting Publish
You’ve got a million ideas. A Canva folder full of half-finished carousels. A Google Doc graveyard of blogs that never saw the light of day.
But you’re not publishing. You’re perfecting...which is secretly procrastinating.
And here’s what that’s doing to your biz: it’s making your progress invisible. No one can hire you if they don’t know what you do. No one can say yes to your offer if they’ve never seen it. No one’s buying from your drafts folder.
✅ What to do instead:
Post the thing, even if your inner critic cringes
Practice sharing before you feel “ready”
Get visible so your dream clients can find you
Publishing is how you build trust, credibility, and momentum. Cringe and post anyway.
Bad Habit #4: Overcomplicating Everything
Ah yes, the “But it can’t be that simple!” trap.
You think you need a 14-step funnel, a perfectly branded photoshoot, and a color-coded Trello board to get your first client. Meanwhile, people with half your heart and zero your education are out here making bank because they’re just… showing up and doing the thing.
✅ What to do instead:
Stick to the basics: a clear offer, a way to talk about it, and somewhere to invite people in
Rinse and repeat. Improve as you go.
Business isn’t easy, but it is simple. Don’t let complexity be your comfort zone.
Bad Habit #5: Being Too Frugal
You want to build a real business, but you won’t invest in anything that doesn’t come with a 90% off code and a free sticker.
Here’s the deal: frugality in life? Great.
Frugality in business? Dangerous.
You’re not buying things you don’t need. You’re avoiding the support, strategy, and systems that would actually get you clients—because you're scared.
✅ What to do instead:
Start seeing money as a skill, not a moral issue
Treat investments as acts of belief in your future
Ask: “What would a confident CEO do?”
You can’t grow a premium business with a penny-pinching mindset. You are worth investing in.
Bad Habit #6: Avoiding Discomfort (a.k.a. Playing It Safe)
You’re playing to not lose instead of playing to win.
You delay launching because “it’s not perfect.”
You won’t post about your offer because “what if no one buys?”
You’re trying to avoid embarrassment, rejection, or making a wrong turn.
But playing it safe is costing you growth, clarity, and income.
✅ What to do instead:
Make peace with being uncomfortable (it means you’re expanding)
Do the scary thing anyway
Let mistakes be part of the magic
Regret doesn’t come from messing up—it comes from not even trying. Start walking the messy, magical path toward your dreams. Your future clients are waiting.
Bad Habit #7: Clinging to the Old You
Let’s get honest: you say you want to be a successful coach, but you’re still living like someone who doesn’t believe she can be.
Still undercharging.
Still hiding online.
Still questioning every decision and waiting for permission.
You don’t get the results of a confident coach by thinking like a confused one.
✅ What to do instead:
Upgrade your identity before your income
Ask: “What would the $5k/month version of me do today?”
Let go of the old habits, the small mindset, and the scared energy
Your coaching business will only grow to the level of your own belief. Start embodying the woman you’re becoming.
Here’s your next step:
Pick the ONE habit that hit the hardest—and commit to shifting it this week.
Baby steps. Bold moves. Doesn’t matter. Just choose 1!
